RONALD G. KAMINSKI, P.E.Chief Executive Officer
As CEO Principal and Founder of HBK Engineering, LLC, Mr. Kaminski adds over 20 years of Engineering, Construction and Management expertise to the company. Since opening HBK in 1998, Mr. Kaminski has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the firm. Mr. Kaminski’s responsibilities to HBK have changed throughout the years, but a commitment to make HBK the utility industry’s premier engineering resource has never wavered. During the entrepreneurial phase of the company, Mr. Kaminski was involved with every detail of the engineering and construction work with a vision to build a corporate structure necessary for the growth that would ensue. Today, his role includes, but is not limited to, overseeing an executive team that includes both administrative and operations leaders. HBK’s work involves some of the utility industry’s most complex challenges, and performance continues to strengthen its valued reputation of providing safe, constructible and cost-effective deliverables. Mr. Kaminski’s goal to push HBK to the forefront of the utility industry has been accomplished with the help of the firm’s progressive delivery of subsurface utility engineering (SUE) methodology including surface geophysics, 3D Scanners, surveying technology, non-evasive excavation techniques, CADD systems and geographic information software. Mr. Kaminski received his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Iowa and is a licensed professional engineer in the states of Illinois, New York, and Wisconsin. Mr. Kaminski is a former officer of the Greater Chicago Damage Prevention Council (GCDPC) and served as Chairman for GCDPC Best Practices Program Underground Construction. He is proud to be considered as one of the utility industry’s ambassadors, working continuously to protect and maintain the priceless infrastructure of our nation’s subsurface and aboveground utility environments.
Committed to health, education and safety, Mr. Kaminski is a Board Member of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Foundation, Chicago Commons Board Member, Varsity Club Advisory Committee, and a Board Member of the Chicago History Museum. He is involved with The University of Iowa Foundation Engineering Development Task Force, continues to take part in the Illinois March of Dimes Construction and Transportation Awards Luncheon Steering Committee and is an active member of The Economic Club of Chicago.
Mr. Kaminski is married to Meridith Thorz Kaminski and has two beautiful daughters. Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood is home for the family.
As President of HBK, Mr. Rehayem is responsible for overseeing the company’s day-to-day operations and its sustained growth, with emphasis on upholding high client satisfaction and excellence in its deliverables. Mr. Rehayem’s senior leadership team bring forward and direct the development of new solutions and offerings and oversee the company’s expansion into new markets. Mr. Rehayem helps communicate and implement the organization’s vision and overall direction.
In Mr. Rehayem’s 30+ years of experience, he has developed strong expertise leading large, complex organizations and projects, including the nationally recognized public safety initiatives at the City of Chicago while at IBM. Mr. Rehayem provided Executive Leadership on several high profile deployments including the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Transit Authority, and sister agencies, such as the MPEA’s Navy Pier. The Chicago’s Operational Virtual Shield (OVS), a project Roger directly supported, has been recognized as a hallmark in assisting public safety professionals with extensive communications and protections assets. His proven record building and directing successful ventures begins with extraordinary focus on the customer and a solid commitment to teamwork.
Roger has a Master's Degree in Computer Science from Northern Illinois University.
Willard S. Evans, Jr.Chief Diversity Officer
Willard S. Evans, Jr. is the retired president of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, regulated natural gas utilities owned by Integrys Energy Group. Mr. Evans retired as President in September of 2014 and was responsible for the strategic, tactical and operational direction for natural gas operations in Illinois. He provided overall leadership for managers and employees and is responsible for implementation of corporate initiatives and operational plans.
In his almost 40 year career with the company, Mr. Evans has held several senior positions across the business. From 1997 to 2003, he was the Vice President of Information Technology Service. In 2003, he became the Vice President of Operations. In 2004, Mr. Evans became Vice President of Gas Supply and Engineering, and assumed the role of Vice President of Gas Engineering in 2007 after the merger of Peoples Energy and Wisconsin Public Service.
As Vice President of Gas Engineering, Will led a team that provided engineering services to all of Integrys’ subsidiaries across the Midwest including Peoples Gas, Wisconsin Public Service, Michigan Gas Utilities, North Shore Gas and Minnesota Energy Resources.
As Chief Diversity Office at HBK, Mr. Evans will provide strategic leadership by establishing and nurturing relationships with diverse suppliers and organizations. He collaborates with Executive and Leadership teams on building diversity capacity. Although not solely responsible for the results, Mr. Evans is committed to encouraging the diversity goals that are included in the incentive compensations for all employees.
Mr. Evans has an Electrical Engineering and Management degree from Northwestern University. He is a member of the American Association of Blacks in Energy, the Northwestern Club of Chicago and the Kellogg Alumni Club of Chicago.
Mr. Evans serves as the Chairman of the Board of Chicago Commons and Chairman, Human Relations Commission-Village of Skokie.
SANDRA ARREDONDOChief Administrative Officer & Chief HR Officer
Sandra Arredondo is the Chief Administrative Officer & Chief HR Officer responsible for HBK’s functional support areas: Human Resources, Information Technology, Finance, Community Relations, Marketing, and Facilities. Sandra first joined HBK as a consultant in January 2016 leading the Human Resources department responsible for HBK’s 400+ workforce. She quickly established herself as a leader who became integral in the vision of building strong synergy between the functional support areas as they continue adding great value and efficiencies to the organization at large.
Sandra has over 20 years of HR leadership experience within organizations such as GE, NBC and Tribune. Most recently as SVP of HR at Tribune Media she was responsible for overseeing all of broadcasting’s human resources’ functions across 42 local television and radio stations consisting of 5,000+ employees. Sandra has gained tremendous experience integrating employee populations and human resource functions following large-scale mergers and acquisitions during her time at Tribune, GE and NBC.
Sandra has a Master’s Degree in Labor & Industrial Relations and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana. She serves on the board of ABC Pilsen of Chicago.
ERIC R. BERGSTROMSr. Vice President / Director of Chicago Operations
Mr. Bergstrom is responsible for the business operations for the Chicago office which includes the management of the HBK sales and support staff. He focuses on new business development in the Chicago area as well as strategic initiatives for the firm.
As Sr. Vice President, Mr. Bergstrom is a leader in two important roles: Sector Lead Coordinator (SLC) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). As SLC, Eric acts as a focal point for HBK's Sector Leads to help leverage organizational efficiencies between Sectors and to build up our cross-Sector capabilities. As CTO, Eric is leading our initiative to expand our technology offerings. This represents an exciting growth area for our company, not only adding to our portfolio, but also diversifying our revenue streams.
Mr. Bergstrom has extensive experience in the design, management, permitting and construction of private improvement projects within the City of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. The main focus of his work has been route development and engineering project management for Commonwealth Edison transmission projects and project management and construction oversight of telecommunication infrastructure improvements. Mr. Bergstrom received his Bachelor's Degree (with honors) in Communications from Kent University (Maidstone Kent, UK).
JOHN W. JERAK, J.D., MBASr. Vice President / General Counsel
Mr. Jerak serves as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at HBK. Mr. Jerak is responsible for leading HBK's engineering team for legal, government relations, corporate development and new business development (strategic partnerships and licensing opportunities).
Prior to joining HBK, Mr. Jerak represented and provided general counsel to individuals, entrepreneurs and domestic corporations. In private practice, Mr. Jerak's focus was on the creation and modification of business relationships. His legal work comprises issue analysis and risk management in contracts, litigation alternatives and general business practices. Consulting engagements have included general project management and situational issues in strategic planning, corporate development, start-ups and acquisitions.
Mr. Jerak served as an operating principal in a newly formed financial products company that developed short-term investment and cross-sector risk arbitrage products for middle market public taxing bodies and not-for-profit organizations. He has held line, management and staff positions with Burroughs Corporation (Systems Engineering), Standard Oil Company of Indiana (Corporate Systems Planning), The Grace Commission (Project Management - Housing and Urban Development) and the First National Bank of Chicago (Computer Operations, Product Management, Corporate Development and Investment Banking).
In addition to graduate studies in computer science (University of Chicago, Department of Computer Sciences), financial services law (IIT Kent Law School) and global markets and trading (IIT Stuart School of Business), Mr. Jerak holds degrees from the University of Illinois (B.A.- Psychology), DePaul University College of Law (J.D.), and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (M.B.A.- Finance).
BRIAN M. MULLIGAN, P.E.Sr. Vice President / Director of East Coast Operations
Brian Mulligan manages HBK Engineering, LLC’s business operations for the East Coast and has been responsible for these operations since opening the first satellite office in Norristown, PA in May 2007. Brian was also responsible for expanding HBK’s presence in the Philadelphia area with the opening of our Center City Philadelphia office in May 2015. He is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of these satellite offices as well as new business development within the East Coast area. Brian also works closely with HBK’s Chicago area Senior Vice Presidents to jointly oversee all projects of the firm. Prior to HBK, Brian was responsible for program management for the reconstruction of the Chicago Transit Authority’s Brown Line.
Brian was instrumental in developing HBK’s east coast two from two people in 2007 to approximately 40 people today. Brian has been the single point of contact for Exelon’s PECO territory since 2007. Brian has been responsible for developing HBK’s service offerings to PECO Energy to include underground transmission, overhead and underground distribution, underground secondary network design, substation civil design and other specialty service offerings. Brian is knowledgeable in all project phases including planning, preliminary engineering, design, estimating, procurement, construction, claims, and closeout. His areas of expertise include: underground electrical transmission engineering, underground electrical distribution engineering, transit station design, infrastructure design, constructability, issues resolution, problem solving, cost control, scheduling, and interaction with clients, consultants and contractors.
Brian fulfills a critical role at HBK managing multiple projects from beginning to end. He improved and streamlined all aspects of project execution, including proposal development, contract execution, project controls, resource allocation, client interface, and design development. Brian is very focused on the customer experience and mentoring of HBK’s newer employees. His leadership and professionalism are valued by both HBK’s clients and employees. Brian received his BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering degree from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in 1994 where he also received the award for Best Naval Architecture Senior Thesis for that year. Brian is a licensed professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania, New York New Jersey and Illinois.
Brian lives in Audubon, Pennsylvania with his wife Gisele and daughters, Olivia and Sofia, where they enjoy the history and outdoor activities of the Valley Forge area.
DONALD N. KLEYWEG, P.E.Sr. Vice President / Director of Engineering
Mr. Kleyweg has over two decades of engineering experience, including capital program development as well as design and construction management of utility, municipal and DOT infrastructure projects. Mr. Kleyweg’s expertise is in the planning and design of overhead and underground infrastructure projects in the electric and gas utility markets for substation, transmission and distribution installations with emphasis on constructability and feasibility. Mr. Kleyweg is knowledgeable in all project aspects from project inception, through all phases of design, estimating, procurement, construction support through to project closeout.
Mr. Kleyweg is directly responsible for overseeing the design output of HBK Engineering’s team of engineers and designers, with an emphasis on maintaining a high quality product while providing superior client satisfaction. Mr. Kleyweg is responsible for resolution of field related issues, key problem solving, scheduling and interaction with clients, consultants and contractors.
Mr. Kleyweg holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Master’s of Science degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with an emphasis on structural and geotechnical engineering. He currently maintains status as a Licensed Professional Engineer in over 40 states.
DOUGLAS YERKES, Ph.D., P.E.Vice President/Director of Municipal Services
Mr. Yerkes has over 25 years of public and private sector experience in the municipal infrastructure and environmental engineering fields. He has lived and worked in several states, and since 2005 he has resided in Chicago.
Mr. Yerkes’ public sector experience includes serving as the Chief of Infrastructure and First Deputy Procurement Officer for the City of Chicago, where he led initiatives for alternative capital project delivery, contract and procurement efficiency enhancement, transparency, and infrastructure management. He also served as City Engineer for the City of San Antonio, Texas, where he was responsible for the City’s engineering functions and for directing design management, construction management and program controls staff for more than $750 million in capital projects. These projects included traffic control systems, roads, bridges, drainage systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, fire stations, libraries and other types of municipal infrastructure projects.
In the private sector, Mr. Yerkes has worked for consulting engineering firms and a large, international infrastructure operations company. With these companies, he has held positions in office operations, business development, program management, and technical design.
Mr. Yerkes completed his Bachelors in Civil Engineering at the University of California at Davis as well as his Masters and Doctorate in Environmental Engineering and Vanderbilt University. He is currently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), and the American Public Works Association (APWA) where he is on the executive board of the City Branch.
JAMES R. JACKSON, P.E.Sr. Vice President / Director of Special Projects
James Jackson, Jr. was recently promoted to Senior Vice President. Jim is one of the founding engineers, one of the first employees, of HBK Engineering, LLC. Jim has a proven record in development, coordination, and management of Infrastructure design and construction management projects. His main focus is management of underground utility infrastructure projects within the City of Chicago and suburbs. For the past several years, Mr. Jackson worked inside construction companies and private utilities organizations, where he acquired a strong understanding of how to direct critical path items through procedural limitations while still maintaining owners’ schedules. With his extensive experience, Mr. Jackson brings leadership and knowledge with a constructability view point to every project.
Mr. Jackson also has extensive experience and knowledge in the field of Environmental Engineering and consulting. In addition to focusing on the study of Environmental Engineering during the course of his Master’s Degree, Mr. Jackson worked in the environmental industry during the eight years before he joined HBK Engineering. In the environmental industry, Mr. Jackson’s worked primarily in the areas of site investigations and remediation, waste management, regulatory compliance, and due diligence.
